Sirius chuckled softly and pressed another kiss to Cassiopeia's head before moving over to Lily and wrapping his arms around her. He too wanted to hear everything about Cassie's first term in school and hoped that she was enjoying herself.

To be honest, it had been a surprise and thus hard to come to terms with his daughter being sorted into Slytherin. Lily had to remind him that not everyone in Slytherin was an evil wanker (only a good portion of them). At the end of the day, she was their daughter though and they taught her better than to be like her cousin. Already she was making waves by becoming friends with classmates outside of her house so perhaps they did something right.

They had to have. It wasn't like she'd spent all her life growing up in Grimmauld or a place like Malfoy Manor. She'd been all over the world with them since the day she was born.

"He came by yesterday, in fact, to make sure there was plenty of Slytherin pride in your room. I told him this house is a testament to that pride," Sirius said dryly but with amusement that no doubt his wife and daughter would both pick up on. "And you will go far, you are your Mother's daughter, after all."

Cassie looked at her parents and felt any remaining tension in her shoulders melt out of her. "I've missed you both. It's not the same being in school and not seeing you both every day. Or traveling," she said with a laugh. After swallowing a lump of emotion she picked up the box and opened it, blinking at the sight of the delicate snake necklace resting inside. "Mum... Dad, thank you," she said and lifted it out of the box to hold in her hands. "It's beautiful. I love it."

She brought up and slid it around her neck before looking down at it then looking at her parents. "What do you think?"

Sirius watched and smiled. "It looks beautiful, sweetheart."

Lily made a face as Sirius mentioned their house being a testament to Slytherin pride, gently bumping his arm with her hand as she stepped away from him, grinning affectionately. "Oh, it's not as though you haven't added a few touches of your own," over the years spent traveling they had stayed in his family home in London only a handful of times when they visited her parents, or his cousin Andromeda. Now that Cassie was going to Hogwarts Lily and Sirius wanted to remain close enough to get to their daughter in a hurry should something go wrong.

She imagined in a few years once Cassie was used to school they'd be able to resume roving the world even while Cassie's classes were in session. For now, just until not only Cassie, but her parents got used to the change in their lives, Lily and Sirius were going to make their home at Grimmauld Place - whether the house liked it or not.

For Lily, this was certainly an adjustment. Cassie hadn't been away from either of them since the day she'd been born in that little cottage deep in the Italian countryside. Once the baby had gotten a little bigger she had just come with them everywhere - and now she was growing up, having her own life and far too big for the baby carrier she'd ridden across the world inside at the beginning of her life.

Cassie going away to Hogwarts, and coming back a Slytherin was the first time Lily was forced to reckon with the fact that their little girl was growing up, and watching her daughter try on her new necklace now made her want to cry both out of happiness that it was their daughter's turn to find her way in life, but also because she'd likely never ride on her mother's shoulders through the jungle again.

Quickly returning to Sirius's side to loop a steadying arm around his middle she beamed in approval at Cassie, nodding. "You look so grown up," she beamed, turning away from the sight with a little sniffle.

"So! Teachers, start at the beginning. Who's a weirdo? Who's a wanker? Who do you like!" Lily busied herself with getting everything ready for their meal, not wanting to be the sappy, soppy mother who teared up at these moments.

“As if not adding our own touches was ever in question. Besides, the last thing we needed was the blasted portrait of my mother screaming at us every single time we walked through the doors.” Sirius sent Lily an amused grin. “At least it’s starting to not feel like the house I grew up in and a good mixture of us.”

Cassie laughed as she watched them. It had been really hard to leave them and to go to Hogwarts. It had been everything she’d been looking forward to of course but after traveling as much as they did, learning as much as she had… it was weird staying in one place for more than a few months. Not only that but not seeing them every day like she was so used to was an even bigger adjustment.

Many of her peers didn’t seem to understand it at first (mostly why she would even bother to go to Hogwarts when her family left England all those years ago) but she wasn’t exactly their prime focus, thankfully. Most of the attention went to Neville Longbottom, The Boy Who Lived… or, if you asked Cassie, The Boy Who Was Dealt A Lousy Hand.

He was nice though and had even offered to sit with her for a class. He was shy and not at all like the few sleazy articles (the ones that got passed his grandmother) penned him to be (namely boisterous and arrogant).

“I don’t know, Dad - I almost miss the slight hesitation she had on her face when she’d see me. Like she was still surprised that you had a child. I wonder what she’d think now.” Though, truth be told, she didn’t at all miss it nor would she ever have cared enough to meet the woman in real life. She seemed like a monster of a woman!

Cassie lifted a hand to brush the stray tear aside, just happy that she was back home with her parents.

“Professor Quirrell is definitely the strangest of the lot. He reeks of garlic and has an unusual turban on his head. At first I thought he was turned into a vampire while he was in Romania but he insists he received it from a prince. Something isn’t right about him though. He’s a strange one. And Professor Snape! Merlin, he’s a right pain but worse to Neville Longbottom.”

Sirius hold Lily close and watched and listened as Cassie spoke. He was glad, no, thrilled that although she was sorted into Slytherin, she was still Cassie… the girl who seemed to make friends no matter where she went. He wanted to say something especially snarky about Snape but he refrained.
