He gives up with the salve, knowing a lost battle when he sees one, but the other part is outrageous. Seriously? She's going to give Hagrid as an example?

"One, I took students to the part of the forest where centaurs don't go, and found one hanging out where he shouldn't. Two, I too seven-years. Hagrid took me to the Forest on detention when I was in my first year. So, you know. Kettle, pot. Seriously, nothing too bad happened. I'm just mad that apparently I didn't teach those kids basic wand safety in the three years I've taught them. I should've had warning and cover from them. It's a good thing I didn't put one of them at the helm."

"You've got a fine reason to spring a few extra quizzes on them now, don't you?" Lily was still frowning, but at least it was more a look of concern than anything outwardly disdainful.

Once she had finished carefully covering the bruises on his face in the salve she stepped back, looking his face over with a small nod, satisfied at the way the bruising had already begun to lighten. "Wine? Have you eaten anything for supper yet?"

He lets out a bark of laughter, and leans to give her a hug, just out of fondness. Mother, never change.

"Of course I haven't. I knew I was coming here, and I'm not an amateur. I also did bring wine, thank you for asking. Here." He pulls a bottle out of his pocket, one of those new fashion tricks of casting Extension Charms on one pocket in the set of robes. It has been incredibly handy. "As for the kids... I honestly don't want to do extra quizzes. They need practical stuff, wand in hand. Maybe some kind of community service, so they start feeling responsible for someone. Merlin, just listen to me. I'm talking about teaching someone responsibility. How have I become this?"
