"It's unfair," Lupin agreed, deeply.

There'd been a moment when he'd asked to be Harry's guardian. With another moment's thought, he hadn't needed Dumbledore to point out that was impossible. Lupin couldn't have provided a stable environment for an infant. (Or, though Albus wouldn't say it, the reasonable expectation of safety. From himself.) Even Remus's suggestion he could help guard Harry, even if Harry never knew he was there, was shot down. Something about burying him with those horrid muggles was ruled necessary—no matter the psychological cost. Lupin wasn't sure he'd ever agree. But he owed Albus too much to carry the anger—and knew vividly better than most how there were always at least two things more Albus knew than anyone else. So, he shook it off and trusted. Even if he privately, occasionally indulged the what ifs.

"Why don't I focus on the 'tubers and you on the perch?"

And if there was anything else on Harry's mind. Lupin would leave room rather than confront. He did add, "Rest of your classes going all right? Mine excluded, no need to mix motives."
